Ya he hablado del término común para muchos tipos de vehículos, el carro. Entonces, ahora les comentaré acerca de la combi.
Combi: ce, o, eme, be, i. Una palabra llana, de dos sílabas: «com» y «bi».
Significado: La combi es un vehículo de transporte público para pocos pasajeros que realiza trayectos cortos y fijos, estos vehículos son populares en muchas ciudades de Perú.
Ahora vamos por el contexto. ¿Cuándo se usa la palabra combi?
Esta es una palabra que se usa diariamente en las ciudades y pueblos donde exista este tipo de transporte terrestre.
Ejemplos:
- El pasaje en combi se ha elevado en más del 60% (sesenta por ciento).
- ¿Quién es el mejor chofer de combi?
- Baja en la siguiente esquina —le dijo Juan al chofer de la combi.
- En esta combi entran 10 (diez) personas como máximo.
- Las combis de mi barrio no tienen permisos, son informales.
Y ahora unos datos extras:
Las camionetas tipo combi fueron necesarias en décadas pasadas, cuando ciudades como Lima comenzaron a poblarse exageradamente y no había muchos buses de transporte urbano.
En la actualidad, las combis siguen siendo populares, pero ya no tanto como antes, aunque sí son útiles en lugares donde no existen otros tipos de transporte público.
En algunas combis trabajan tanto el chofer y el cobrador. El cobrador de combi recolecta el dinero de las personas que suben al vehículo y también vocea la ruta del vehículo.

Combi: ce, o, eme, be, i. A word stressed on the penultimate syllable, with two syllables: «com» and «bi».
Meaning: Combi is a public transport vehicle for few passengers that makes short, fixed routes, these vehicles are popular in many cities in Peru.
Now let’s go to the context. When is the word combi used?
This is a word that is used daily in cities and towns where this type of motorized vehicle exists.
And now… some examples:
- Combi fares have risen by more than 60% (sixty percent).
- Who’s the best combi driver?
- “Get off at the next corner,” Juan told the combi driver.
- There are a maximum of 10 (ten) people in this combi.
- Combis in my neighborhood don’t have license, they are informal.
And now some extra information:
Combi-type vans were necessary in past decades, when cities like Lima began to become overcrowded and there were not many urban transport buses.
Today, combis are still popular, but not as popular as they used to be, although they are useful in places where there are no other types of public transport.
In some combis, both the driver and the collector work. The collector (obviously) collects money from the people who are on the vehicle and also announces the vehicle’s route along the way.
