Ya hemos hablado del ají, el choclo, la palta, la cancha, la papa y el camote. En este episodio hablaremos de la torta.

Torta: te, o, erre, te, a. Una palabra llana, de dos sílabas: «tor», y «ta».

Significado: En Perú, la torta es un pastel grande, de forma redonda, relleno de frutas, crema o alguna otra cosa dulce. La torta frecuentemente se consume en celebraciones de cumpleaños o bodas, por eso se colocan velas y otros adornos en la parte superior.

En otros países hispanohablantes, se le conoce como tarta, pastel o ponqué.

Ahora vamos por el contexto. ¿Cuándo se usa la palabra torta?

Se usa en situaciones que involucren vocabulario de comida, en recetas y en pastelerías.

Y ahora… ejemplos:

1. Una de mis favoritas es la torta de chocolate.
2. Para el cumpleaños de mi sobrino compramos una torta temática en forma de camiseta de fútbol.
3. Después de cantar “Cumpleaños feliz”, el cumpleañero partió la torta.
4. Cristiano pidió su deseo antes de soplar las treinta velas de su torta de cumpleaños.
5. Noel dijo que la torta de su boda no tendrá esos típicos muñequitos de adorno.

Y ahora unos datos extras:

Colocar velas en las tortas era una tradición griega, claro está que las tortas o pasteles no eran iguales a los de ahora, eran en forma de luna, pero las velas simbolizaban la luz de la luna y se ofrecían a la diosa Artemisa.

Los ingredientes de una torta pueden variar según la receta, pero generalmente son huevos, azúcar, polvo de hornear, mantequilla, agua, entre otros.

We’ve already talked about ají, choclo, palta, cancha, papa, and camote. Now it’s time to talk about torta (cake).

Torta: te, o, erre, te, a. A word stressed on the penultimate syllable, with two syllables: “tor” and “ta”.

Meaning: In Peru, torta is a large, round cake filled with fruit, cream or something else sweet. Torta is often eaten at birthday celebrations or weddings, so candles and other decorations are placed on top of it.

In other Spanish-speaking countries, it is known as pastel, tarta, and ponqué.

Now let’s talk about the context. When is the word torta used?

It’s used in situations involving food vocabulary, recipes and in pastry/cake shops.

And now… some examples:

1. One of my favorites is chocolate cake.
2. For my nephew’s birthday we bought a soccer jersey themed cake.
3. After singing «Happy Birthday», the birthday boy cut the cake.
4. Cristiano made his wish before blowing out the thirty candles on his birthday cake.
5. Noel said that his wedding cake will not have those typical little dolls as decorations.

And now some extra information:

Placing candles in cakes was a Greek tradition, of course the cakes were not the same as today, they were prepared in the shape of the moon, but the candles symbolized the moonlight and were offered to the goddess Artemis.

The ingredients of a cake may vary according to the recipe, but generally they’re eggs, sugar, baking powder, butter, water, among others.
